What is Grace Worth?

Have you ever thought about the number of awards, accolades, and achievements we strive for in our world today? It starts at an early age with our children. Go into any proud parent’s home and you will often find a small area of the house—perhaps a book shelf or a hallway wall—decorated with a plethora of participation awards and trophies from their child’s various activities.

If you are filmmaker, there are approximately 95 awards you can receive in the United States alone. (Each country has their own list of awards available.) In the world of entrepreneurs and business people, the motto is to be the best salesman or the most successful district manager. Bonuses and all-expense-paid vacations are given to those who obtain these prestigious titles. Our most high profile role models are the rich and famous, so we strive for greater wealth, responsibility, and recognition. You can contact expert estate planning attorneys for hire if you want to plan and manage your properties and assets.

With that in mind, I want to tell you about a letter the Apostle Paul wrote to Christians living in Ephesus because it speaks to us in a profound way, some two thousand years later. Paul’s epistle is called the book of Ephesians in the New Testament of the Bible. Ephesus was a city in ancient Greece that was a center of prosperity. It was also a hub for idolatry and crime. But in the middle of all this darkness, God did an amazing thing! He raised up a great church that would boldly shine forth His light.

Because Ephesus was so accustomed to wealth, you’ll notice how many terms of prosperity Paul uses in his letter to the Christians living in that city. Not to worry—he was not one of those “health, wealth, and prosperity” preachers we need to be cautious of today. Paul is talking about something eternally greater. He is talking about the riches of God’s grace through Jesus Christ.

He writes in Ephesians 1:7-8 about Jesus,

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us…”

To lavish is to “expend or give in great amounts or without limit.” Paul is saying that God heaps undeserved merit and favor upon those who choose to believe in His Son Jesus. Then Paul writes probably one of the most well-known verses in the Bible that perfectly captures what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about:

“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:6-9).

This would have been a mind-blowing concept to the Ephesians who were used to business, trade, and earning every cent they made. Through faith in Jesus, the free gift of eternal salvation was theirs. All because of God’s unfathomable kindness—through the incomparable riches of His grace.

Grace, my friend, is of greater worth than all the money, yachts, Rolexes, and diamonds in the world. There is no other trophy—which serves as a token of great victory, valor, or skill—we could place upon our mantelpiece and there is no other achievement that could measure up to what Christ has done in our lives and in our hearts.

Right now at Shepherd Church, we are in a sermon series about the book of Ephesians called, “Trophies of Grace.” We will learn more about the incredible lavishness of God’s grace—how it changes who we are and how we live. I hope you will join us!

A Dog who Prays !!!

We had a contest at our church for the most creative picture from all of our small groups that were studying through the book “God Has An App For That”.    I had decided that I was going to visit the life/small group of the winning photo.   The winning photo was that of a dog leading the group in the Bible study.   So last night, true to my word, I visited the life group and met the dog of the infamous picture.   Not only could this dog lead a life group on “God Has An App For That”, he also was a dog of prayer.   I saw it with my own eyes.   Here is a photo of a very Godly dog who prays at any given time.  Enjoy!   www.GodHasAnApp.com

Top 10 Preachers in America!

I will never forget the time Billy Graham was on T.V and I commented to my son (who was about 9 years of age at the time) that Billy Graham was the greatest preacher ever. And my son started to cry and said “Dad, I thought you were the greatest preacher of all time”. Even though I, too, would be partial in feeling that about my own father and even though I was thankful for my son’s innocent expression of appreciation towards me, I want to share with you MY LIST of the top ten preachers in America. You’ll notice several names like Billy Graham, Francis Chan and others NOT on my list. Because here is the criteria for making my list.

a) You have to be pastoring a local congregation. Writing sermons weekly.
b) You have to be more of a preacher than a teacher. For me… preachers have a tad bit more of emotion and passion with their delivery.
c) You have to have a heart that leans towards evangelism and reaching the lost.
d) These are men that I enjoy hearing. They move me to want to follow Christ and to reach the lost.

Here’s the list!

#10) Wayne Cordeiro is the founding pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Honolulu, Hawaii with over 14,500 in weekend attendance. New Hope is also listed as one of the top ten most innovative churches in America with Outreach Magazine listing them as one of the “top five churches to learn from.” New Hope is known for redeeming the arts and technology. Over 3,000 attending services each week via the Internet. New Hope has seen over 73,000 first time decisions in Hawaii since its inception 27 years ago.

Wayne is a church planter at heart with over 108 churches planted in the Pacific Rim countries of the Philippines, Japan, Australia and Myanmar. Nationally, he has planted churches in Hawaii, California, Montana, Washington, and Nevada. I know he is doing more more with his college than his church, but I love to hear this man preach!

#9) Pastor Ken Whitten of the Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa Florida. Pastor Whitten delivers the word of God in a way that touches the heart. He will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. He will set God’s word as the ONLY standard to live by and will walk you through the scriptures verse by verse communicating in such a manner that draws the listener in. He has a true pastoral heart, caring for the many members of his church as a shepherd carefully guards his flock. A friend and mentor of mine and if I lived in the Tampa area I would gladly sit and hear him preach week after week.

#8) Dr David Jeremiah is the founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church near San Diego, California. Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment is to teaching the whole Word of God. His passion for people and his desire to reach the lost are evident in the way he communicates Bible truths and his ability to get right to the important issues. I count his church as one of the most blessed churches in the land in having him be their teaching pastor. He makes me want to be a better student of the word of God.

#7) No list of top preachers can be completed without the name of Dr. John MacArthur. Sr. Pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. John’s church is only 20 minutes away but his voice is carried around the world through “Grace to you” ministries. Known as an expository preacher he still delivers God’s truth with unmatched passion and energy. Listening to John will leave you wishing for MORE! He is the standard for preaching with conviction.

#6) Greg Laurie of the Harvest Church in Riverside, California and the Harvest Crusades. He was once labeled the “next Billy Graham” and having heard Greg many times on the largest Christian Radio station in the world KKLA 99.5 FM Los Angeles it is easy to see why he makes my list. Greg has a rare gift in taking the word of God and making it relevant to today’s modern listener. His heart for the lost and compassion to reach the unsaved is his calling card.

#5) Andy Stanley from North Point Church in Alpharetta, Georgia. Probably more preachers listening to Andy weekly than any other pastor. His messages are current, biblical, insightful and engaging. Chances are your pastor has preached a series or two from North Point Church. He and his father Charles might be the best father/son combo of all time. If you get a chance, go to his website and listen to one of his podcast and you’ll know why he is on my top 5 list.

#4) Adrian Rodgers! smile! I hope you don’t mind me putting Adrian on the list because I know he has graduated into heaven. Known for his evangelistic zeal and uncompromising commitment to the Word of God, Adrian Rogers was one of the greatest preachers, respected Bible teachers, and Christian leaders of our time. For over fifty years, he consistently presented the Good News of Jesus Christ with strong conviction, compassion, and integrity. Under his pastoral leadership, Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, grew from 9,000 members in 1972 to more than 29,000 at his retirement in 2005. Go to LWF.org to hear a voice and a sermon like no other! If you want his response on retirement services, they can check it out from here!

#3) Jeff Walling! I have a host of men that I really could have put in this spot. My own father H. Dean Rutherford, Rick Atchley, David Stone, Don Wilson, Kyle Idleman, my brother David Rutherford, Kerry Shook, John Ortberg, Bill Hybels, Matt Proctor, Jud Wilhite, Jonathan Falwell, Jack Graham, Ronnie Floyd, Miles McPherson, Craig Groeschel, Robert Morris, Rick Warren, Gene Appel, Jentzen Franklin, Philip Wagner, James MacDonald, John Hagee, Chris Siedman, Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, Mark Scott, Jack Hayford, Tim Spivey, Charles Swindoll, Jim Reeve, and John Piper. But my number 3 slot is the one and only Jeff Walling! Sr Pastor of the Providence Road Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Go to wallingondvd.com and you’ll see why he is number 3.

#2) Can only be brother T.D. Jakes of the Potter’s House. Time cited Jakes’s delivery and his skillful handling of Scripture: “He purrs like Isaac Hayes and screams like Jay Hawkins … And however leisurely Jakes’s presentation may seem, each sermon eventually reveals itself as perfectly calibrated and balanced, cohering into an often exquisite extended metaphor.” When I hear him preach I wonder why I would ever attempt to even try.

Finally we come to #1 on my list of great preachers!

#1) Are the other 500,000 preachers whose names you’ll never know that show up week after week in the pulpits across America and who “rightly divide the word of God”. The one’s that I most love, that I most appreciate are the local pastors of local churches who are never on the radio. They are never on T.V. They have never written a book. But every week, they study and prepare and then stand in their pulpits and preach their hearts out trying to reach the lost and edify the saved. They are the true hero’s. The true soldiers of the cross. I salute every preacher who stands weekly in his pulpit preaching as a dieing man to a dieing crowd. May we forever lift up the Name and Word of Jesus! By his blood we are saved and redeemed! If you are a preacher…. simply write your name here _____________. YOU ARE NUMBER ONE ON MY LIST OF GREAT PREACHERS!

God Has An App For That!

For those who are wondering what they would glean from reading the book, God Has An App For That!, which was released this month, I wanted to explain WHY this book was written.

There are millions of people living in America with no moral absolute. We have bought in completely to the idea that we can live our lives as we please… that we need not worry about anything except what makes us feel good. We have taken God out of the equation of humanity, and we have walked down alleys and roads that lead to depression and unfulfilled lives, not realizing that God’s Word has the answers to some of our most difficult issues.
Once we find ourselves burdened by the cares of this world–which often is a result of a life lived in vain–we turn to everything BUT God to help soothe our broken hearts. We will try masking our pain with drugs or alcohol. We will use sex in hopes that momentary pleasure will bring lasting peace. We will spend enormous amounts of time involved in hobbies and recreation to busy ourselves in an attempt to distract ourselves from our problems. We might turn to counseling or search online for a solution to life’s dilemmas, all the while NOT RECOGNIZING that God’s Word has the solution to all of life’s complex issues.
The question at hand then is HOW DO WE GET PEOPLE TO REALIZE THEY NEED TO SEARCH GOD’S WORD to find their help, comfort, wisdom and direction?
So I had this idea to write a book called, God Has An App For That!, in hopes that the title alone would pique their interest, that a little light would come on, so to speak, and that they would then want to pick up a copy and read, God Has An App For That! After reading this book, my hope is that people would reach a couple of monumental conclusions: 1.) That there IS a vast amount of wisdom and help inside the Word of God, and 2.) That they, indeed, NEED to read the Bible–and actually begin reading God’s precious word on a daily basis. We are so optimistic about that this that we’ve placed a Bible Reading Guide at the end of the book.
When a person reads God Has An App For That!, YES they will find unforgettable illustrations; YES they will find steps to upload to help them overcome some of life’s great struggles; YES they will find that the book is easy to read; YES they will laugh and be challenged; but hopefully and prayerfully they will sit down at the end of the day and say, “I need to read the Bible because there is some great wisdom and counsel that God wants to share with me.”
So, I would encourage a strong believer to read God Has an App for That! to remind them of the importance of the Word of God, and I would encourage someone who had never read the Bible to read this book in hopes that it would lead them down a more intentional spiritual path that can only be gleaned from spending time in the Bible. Hopefully, this book will lead people to that assessment and discipline.
Remember, no matter what problem or struggle you are facing, God not only loves you, but he has provided the answers to all of life’s most difficult issues. God Has An App For That! will lead you to those answers. Check out the website: http://www.godhasanapp.com/ to order your copy today and spread the word concerning this exciting new book.

Brewline Bible Study

I was blown away today as I attended and spoke at the Brewline Bible study men’s fellowship in San Fernando. About three years ago, some guys from our church started a little Bible study group at Starbucks in San Fernando. Week after week, these men have been faithful to meet at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday mornings. They sing, read some scripture, worship and then have a guest speaker, followed by a time of prayer.

It’s lively, funny, serious, engaging and worshipful.

Today, this Bible study group had to meet in a larger room because they had about 250 in attendence. It was such a joy to preach for them and to experience first hand and see what God has done through a group of guys who SIMPLY have a desire to make a difference in San Fernando.

These guys LOVE the LORD. They are hardcore followers of Jesus. It’s amazing what God can do when you submit to Him and state, without hesitation, to USE ME LORD. And that is exactly what God is doing. He is using this men’s Bible study group to reach the East Valley. They all had their Bible’s and they were all hungry for God’s word.

I will be faithful to pray for them and if you get a chance, stop by some Saturday morning at 100 San Fernando Rd in San Fernando, CA and be prepared to have God change your heart and direction of your life.

Thank you Brewline for STANDING for Jesus. You blessed me, you humbled me, you taught me and you fed me. Can’t wait to do it again.

Be blessed….

Burning the Quran?

Although I firmly do NOT believe in the Quran, and even though I firmly believe that Jesus is the ONLY way to salvation for all mankind, I believe it’s wrong to have a National Quran Burning Day.

A Pastor named Terry Jones from a small church in Florida is planning such an event. And although there are MANY things that are WRONG about the Quran, burning them is not the answer.

Let me give you several reasons WHY we should NOT be burning the Quran. (I found some of this in an Article written by William Harvey.)

1. It really goes AGAINST being a Christian. I am all for standing up for things that are of God. I preached this past weekend on Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who refused to bow down to a golden image, and we need to have the same courage as them. Honor was given to their God (the one true God) because of their devotion. They were standing for truth; they were not trying to burn down Babylon.

In Acts 19:18-20 there were some folks who burned some books, but they were actually scrolls that they themselves had owned. The passage refers to “those who had practiced curious, magical arts” gathering to burn scrolls in which they no longer believed. This is quite a different act from choosing to burn a book in which you have never believed or burning a book that is going to cause pain world wide.

Jesus made it VERY clear in his Sermon on the Mount that we are to LOVE our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. We are to TURN the other cheek and try to befriend those that think differently than we do. How are we ever going to reach the Muslim people if our first act is to offend them by burning the most important thing in their religion?

Once you burn the Quran, you lose all hope of ever reaching them. They will HATE you and HATE your faith. You will drive them FURTHER AWAY from where you want them to be. It’s possible to reach the Muslims around the world and introduce them to the Savior, but NOT if you start out by burning their sacred book.

Just last week I had a conversation with a Muslim man about the Lord. Just like Jesus with the woman at the well in John 4, I started out by engaging him in a dialogue about current events and then I moved the conversation along until we were able to talk about Jesus being the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

I believe God would have us be merciful to all and to build bridges that enable salvation, rather than burning bridges that divide and hinder the Gospel.

2. It disrespects the memory of those who died on 9/11.

In the words of Mr. Harvey in an open letter to Mr. Terry Jones, “The vicious thugs who attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon almost nine years ago did so in order to widen the cultural divisions between Muslims and non-Muslims. Your planned protest would also accomplish this, allowing the message of violent extremists acting in the name of Islam to resonate more widely. The innocent victims of 9/11 deserve better than for you to use the anniversary of their death to commit an act of which their murderers would have approved.”

3. It is un-American.

The First Amendment protects Americans from any government effort to abridge our freedom of speech. We are free to say and do what we please, however not all things are benifical and in fact, some things cause great harm. If our government said that you had no right to express yourself, this would be un-American, but irresponsibly exercising that right stains our hard-earned heritage of liberty and our tradition of tolerance. In the same way that many people feel it’s within a legal right to build a mosque in the shadow of Ground Zero, just not prudent. The same applies to the burning of the Quran: It might be legal to burn the book, but the wise thing would be NOT to burn it.

I wish everyone felt the same way about our flag. For me the American flag represents the freedom we share. It causes personal pain whenever I see or hear of someone burning a flag. They might have the freedom to do so, but if they were in their right mind they would never do it for the pain it causes in so many people who fought and died for the freedoms we have here in the United States of America.

4. It is endangering American lives.

Your actions endanger not only our military around the world, you are endangering my life and my family. The vast majority of Muslims who learn about the planned protest will peaceably counter-protest, but there will be many, operating under their own perverted interpretation of the religion, who will want to protest by killing Americans wherever they may find them. Thousands of Americans in the military, in the foreign service, and doing humanitarian work in countries from Mauritania to Indonesia (where thousands of Muslims have already marched in protest of your plan) are in danger.

Please join me in praying that this event does NOT unfold and if it does, I pray that we will not be judged by the actions of a few foolish people. But I’m certain we will be, and therein lies the problem beyond our ability to fix.

May God forgive us of ALL of our sins and may we be mericful as God has been merciful to us.

Pastor Dudley
