Call on Jesus and the Conductor

Jeff Marsh is a famous international conductor, who I met while serving jury duty in Chatsworth, and he is a member of our church. He helps conduct our orchestra, and recently, he sent me these pictures and a very kind note. I thought I’d show these pictures to you… Notice he is wearing a Call on Jesus shirt and using it as a witnessing tool. I love stories like this and wanted to share it with you. Can you please pray for Jeff, as God has put him into some very high circles that he would continue to let his light shine and use his gifts to point people to Jesus?

Below, you will find a couple pictures of Jeff conducting members of the Seattle Symphony last March. There were 80 musicians in the orchestra and about 35 in the choir.

U.S. Open or a Divine Appointment

Over a year ago, I was scheduled to be in San Diego during the weekend of June 14 & 15. I was able to secure some tickets to the U.S. Open that was held at the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course. It was a tad exciting to walk the course and to see the best golfers in the world. The only problems were that the tickets cost $100 each, parking was a hassle, there was A LOT of walking involved, and it was hot… but the most difficult thing was the fact that you had to dodge the other 42,000+ people who were all there for the same experience.

Now, you need to know that I enjoy the game of golf. For the most part, it is one of life’s simple pleasures that allows me to get a little exercise in, and, of course, I love to compete. So when you wrap all of this information together, then you might realize to what degree I was hyped up about attending the 2008 U.S. Open (which, by the way, Tiger Woods won).

Little did I know that the reason for my trip was that the Lord had SEVERAL divine appointments for me. See, I had all these great plans, but the Lord had other plans. Can all God’s people say????? Amen!!!

The first divine appointment came at dinner one night. There were three of us having dinner at a Mexican restaurant, and in the middle of the dinner, a waitress walks up to our table out of the blue and asks us if we believed in the Bible. That’s the equivalent of God lobbing a softball in my direction saying, “Dudley, see if you can hit this out of the ballpark.” “Of course!!!” we said, and we proceeded to discover that our waitress had been eavesdropping and had heard us talking about the Bible. She just wanted to learn more. She was from Mazatlan, where she explained that $4.00 was a day’s wage in her hometown, so she is waitressing here in the United States to earn money to send back home to her family. She did NOT have a nice Bible, so this week I know the Lord would have me send her a Bible for her continued growth and interest in the Lord.

Secondly, we had to shuttle (catch a ride) to Torrey Pines because of the crowded parking situation and the woman who drove us began to ask some questions about our church. I’m not sure she heard anything I said, but I know that the Lord used me to plant some seeds into her heart. I was able to tell the person who drove us to the golf course that God revealed Himself to us through His son, Jesus, and that’s why we study the Gospels to learn more about Jesus.

Finally, once inside the ropes of the tournament, I was one of 42,000 people spread out over a rather large golf course, and had only been inside the gates a few minutes when I heard my name called out. It was a lady who attends the Westside campus (mywestsidechurch.com). She, too, was attending the U.S. Open with a friend of hers. We talked for a few minutes, she introduced me to her friend, and–praise the Lord–I was able to walk a hole or two with her friend just to meet him and plant a few seeds within his heart as well.

While I was leaving, it dawned on me that I thought I was there for my own enjoyment, but the Lord had me there for these three divine appointments. For me, it was a vivid reminder of Luke 19:1-1o, where Jesus, in the midst of a vast crowd, looks up and sees Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector, and right there on the spot, the Lord has an encounter with a man who desperately needed salvation.

So remember, whenever you have a plan, the Lord might have another plan. Remember that wherever you go, the Lord might be sending you there for a divine appointment. Remember that even in a crowd, God may have a divine appointment for you, and that appointment will be a MILLION times more significant that seeing someone hit a little ball into a little cup.

Riding down PCH on a Saturday Morning

Before you judge, let me explain…. Since I was about 14 years of age, I have ridden dirt bikes.. We lived up against some hills and trails and at an early age, my dad bought me a motorcycle, and for most of my life, I have always had a love to get out and ride with a group of friends. In recent years, I have mostly ridden with Marty Ramos. Marty is also a lifetime motorcycle rider, and when we ride, I am often the one trying to get him to slow down, and he’s always trying to get me to speed up. Marty and I have always ridden up in the mountains, on trails, fire roads and a few goat paths…

But in the past few months, I have been riding with some folks from our church who like to ride tour/street bikes. YES, I KNOW IT IS DANGEROUS, and there are some crazy drivers out there, but I have so enjoyed getting to ride and in the process, getting to know some other folks in our church who also like to ride….

When we ride, we ALWAYS pray, and the Lord is showing me that there is a whole community out there who ride and who need the Lord. So I have started (smile) a group called the Pastor’s Posse! And we ride 1) For the joy of riding; 2) For the purpose of enjoying the outdoors; 3) For the purpose of Sharing Christ; 4) For the purpose of introducing others to Shepherd of the Hills Church.

So Pray for us, and if you want to be put on our riding list, send me your email address… and you can be a part of the Pastor’s Posse.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834-1892

This past Sunday after church, a woman from the church showed me this quote from Charles Spurgeon, who was a famous preacher in the 1800’s. He was a powerful preacher, and this quote moved me when I heard it, so I wanted to share it with all of you.

Here it is…

If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for.”

Wow, a moving picture of Christians doing everything within our power to reach the lost before they perish.

Again, why not share a comment on what YOU do to help reach the lost.

I will be preaching this weekend on “the most powerful witnessing tool.” Please come with your Bible and a friend.

How do you share your faith?

Then He said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”

Matthew 9:37, 38

This week at church, I shared some creative ways to share your faith with others. Now, it’s your turn. Click on the comments link at the bottom of this post, and you can type in the creative ways you’ve used to share your faith. Then, next week, I might select two or three to share with the church.
