Fearless and Female

Cindy Cushing and Julie Ladd dressed up on “Grandparents Day”
This will be quite the story for those of you patient enough to read it. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas and as usual, a group of us all went to the same elementary school, junior high school and then on to the same high school (Wichita Southeast High School).

The picture above is of two of my friends taken back in elementary school. The girl on the left is Cindy Cushing and the girl on the right is Julie Ladd. They were both very good friends of mine throughout my adolescent years. When college came around, we all went our different ways and it became very difficult to keep tabs on everyone.

Julie, the girl on the right, who happened to be one of the nicest and brightest girls in the entire school, was brutally murdered her freshman year at Wichita State University in her dorm room. She was 19 years old. They believe that she was in her dorm room preparing a Sunday School lesson for church, where she taught on weekends. She had gone to get something to eat out of the vending machines on the bottom floor of the dorm, when her attacker took her life and murdered her in cold blood.

Cindy, the girl on the left, now spends her time traveling the country training and teaching women how to protect themselves. She has a website called http://www.fearlessandfemale.com/ and a blog called http://www.fearlessandfemale.blogspot.com/ that is filled with information and pictures.

Words cannot express how saddened we all continue to be at the loss of Julie’s life all these years later, and words cannot express how thankful we are for the work and dedication of Cindy all these years to help prepare and equip women to protect themselves.

I want to encourage you to go to Cindy’s website and read the dedication page written on behalf of her dear friend, Julie.

I, personally, am blessed by Cindy’s desire to turn a tragedy into a triumph. She took a horrible event in the life of her dear friend, and she has used it as a catalyst to make a difference in our world.

We continue to pray for women who have suffered as a result of the violence in our world.

Thank you, Cindy, for helping all of us…

Michael North is Getting Married

Can you guess WHO is WHO???
Thee Original Michael North. Dudley South. Casey May, Pee Wee, Steve Syatt, Danny Furukawa and Marty Collins…
Our worship Pastor, Michael North, is getting married in just a few days… 🙂 Recently, a few of his friends surprised him with a night out for dinner. We had all arrived early, and Michael’s fiance brought him to Black Angus for some alone time, yet Michael didn’t know what awaited him. Marty Collins had made some Michael North masks, and when he came around the corner, he saw a group of people in the corner booth all singing, “Set the Stage for a Miracle.”

I was laughing so hard that it was hard to sing….. ahahahahahahahaahah

But then we all lowered our masks and had a wonderful evening sharing stories and advice with Michael on marriage and life.

I want to thank Michael for his gift of leading our church in corporate worship. My prayer for him and his future bride is that God would bless him beyond his wildest imaginations. Michael, YOU are a dear friend, and I consider it an honor to work with you side by side in ministry here at Shepherd of the Hills Church.

Right to Life

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted… perhaps the longest time I’ve ever gone without posting…
But a lot has been happening… I have been working on the ’08 theme and schedule, and yesterday was a big day… The Lord usually fills my heart with a direction and a theme. Then ideas and thoughts come flooding into my mind, and yesterday, it was like a dam breaking.

It’s always a blessing to be alone with God and to seek His will and His direction for your life. It’s always an added blessing to search His will on behalf of the church. I want to thank everyone for your patience and your prayers.

I do want to mention that recently, our church hosted an event for the Pregnancy Counseling Center here in the Valley. This is an organization that helps women in crisis. They are a pro-life organization that offers hope to women who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy. They offer help and counsel, as well as prayers and encouragement. They come alongside these women and let them know that there is a lot of help available, if they chose life for their baby.

Since 1973, we have aborted 45 million babies in the United States of America. The Bible teaches us that God knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). God canNOT be pleased with how little concern we show towards the unborn children who are made in HIS image. Please do what you can to help organizations like the Pregnancy Counseling Center.

At this event, Michael W. Smith performed a concert and Jim Caviezel gave his testimony and support. It was a wonderful evening at Shepherd of the Hills Church, but the Lord convicted me that we need to do MORE as a church and MORE as individuals for the sanctity of life.

Fishers of Men

Pastor Tim and I made it home safe and sound, and we truly had one of the best times ever. We were actually able to go fishing one morning for four hours. We were on the Rogue River in Oregon, and our guide’s name is Allen Metcalf.

Tim caught the first fish…. but he held it like a banjo. This picture still makes me chuckle… Then the Lord blessed me with a large King Salmon. We were going to put it back in the river, but the guide has two widows that he provides fish to, and so the fish you see in the picture above was given to one of those two widows. That was fun knowing that we had helped someone.

I always think of the time when Jesus called the disciples to be FISHERS of MEN. We spend so much effort, and think nothing of it, on catching fish… But will we spend as much effort and time reaching LOST souls for Jesus? I hope so… I would hope that we would seek and save the lost MORE than anything else we do.

One more bit of information…. Ask Timbo what he did with the flashlight and the fish…. I’ll never tell…..

Pastor Tim and Dudley

This is Pastor Tim This is Pastor Tim in a very difficult sand trap… ask him how he did on this hole??

For the first time in about 15 years… Tim and I went on a trip by ourselves…. just the two of us…. we took a few days to spend by ourselves… We went to Bandon, Oregon to golf… to talk.. to pray… to dream.. to just spend some time together…

Tim has been my right hand man for a long time, and he spends sooooooooooo much time caring for so many people that I wanted to spoil him a little bit… He took some pictures while we were playing golf and posted them on a website… I think you can click on the link below, and you can see his pictures and comments.. some of them are quite funny….

Tim and I took the caddy out for dinner and prayed for him before the meal. I think it was the first time anyone had ever prayed for him. He didn’t know what to think of either one of us…

But hopefully we were able to make a difference in his life….

If you get a chance, write Timbo a letter and let him know how much you appreciate him..

LETTER OF THE MONTH

Dear Pastor Dudley,
I want to thank you for the blessing of being part of the Baptism at the Beach. Even though I live in Colorado, I have been so blessed by Shepherd of the Hills church. My friend attends Shepherd, and while visiting her four years ago she brought me to a service. Since then, I have felt a connection with Shepherd of the Hills. I watch the services online, she sends me copies of the CD’s, and I can’t tell you how this has helped turn me around.

In 1996 I was in a terrible place with depression and suicide. A friend took me to church here in Denver and I gave my life to Christ. I had a bad experience at that church, and once I left I felt so confused about the Lord and what was right or wrong. I fell away for many years, and then I met my friend who attends Shepherd of the Hills. I was back in my dark depression, was cutting myself, and felt broken. She was baptized at Shepherd one night and I watched her go through a transformation of her own. Seeing her love for the Lord was so inspiring to me that I gave my life back to Christ, and found a church here at home. I no longer think of cutting myself or experience dark depression. Now I know that I am a good, worthy person and that Jesus loves me. I attribute a lot of this to my friend reaching out to me with CD’s and messages from Shepherd.

I feel drawn to Shepherd of the Hills and wish I lived close enough to attend. Unfortunately I don’t, so I will continue to watch on the internet, and be blessed by your teachings. I flew out to California on the weekend of the Baptism at the Beach event, and was baptized by you. It was a rededication for me and a commitment I am ready to make and keep. So thank you Pastor Dudley, for being the blessing you are to so many.

Sincerely,

Blessed in Colorado
